Survey Reveals the Top First Dance Songs for 2024

For the first time in years, Ed Sheeran has been bumped from the top spot, being replaced by the King of Rock’n’Roll as having the most popular first dance song, according to newlyweds.

The latest National Wedding Survey by Hitched.co.uk of over 1,800 freshly married couples asked the name of each couple’s first dance song and revealed that Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love has overtaken Ed Sheeran’s Perfect for the first time in years, thanks to a variety of covers performed by a range of soulful artists.

While Ed Sheeran still remains a firm favourite for newlyweds, his romantic song Perfect has been bumped down to third place, after the classic love song At Last by Etta James. Still, Ed is the only artist to have two songs feature in the top ten, with Thinking Out Loud landing in the 8th spot, just ahead of John Legend and Lewis Capaldi.

Most popular first dance artists

The top ten artists include a mixture of long-gone crooners like Ben E. King and Etta James, retro romantics such as Frankie Valli and Fleetwood Mac, as well as contemporary artists who are still dominating the charts, including Coldplay and the Arctic Monkeys.

When it comes to the artists owning the first dances across the country, there’s still no beating Ed Sheeran, who was picked as the first dance artist for more than 60 couples, according to the newlywed survey conducted by Hitched. This included his top hits Perfect and Thinking Out Loud, but also a range of his other songs including Tenerife Sea, Celestial, and Perfect Duet – his duet with Beyonce.

“We are so used to seeing Ed Sheeran dominating the charts and the most popular wedding song lists, so it’s actually quite nice to see the Elvis revival creep into weddings,” says Zoe Burke, Editor of Hitched.

“From the Elvis movie to the new Priscilla series, the King has been all over mainstream media for the past couple of years, and this is clearly inspiring couples as they plan their weddings.

“For the first time we’re seeing quite a variety of songs and artists in the top 10 – including Arctic Monkeys, inspired by their recent comeback, and Lewis Capaldi. It’s so important when choosing your first dance song that you go for something special to you, not just what is most popular with other couples, and we’re clearly seeing that here!”
