National Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week: Raising awareness of a hidden disease
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting more than 400,000 people in the UK, and for unknown reasons, it affects roughly two to three times more women than men.
The hidden disease causes the immune system to attack the joint lining, causing inflammation, pain and stiffness. Not only does it cause extreme pain, but the disease is also systemic meaning that it can affect a person’s whole system, including key organs like the lungs, heart and eyes.
RA can often go undiagnosed, with many people putting aches and pains down to overdoing it at the gym, gardening or playing with the kids. However, untreated RA can lead to disability and therefore raising awareness of the disease is ever more important.
The 7th–13th of September marks National Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week, which this year – considering the ongoing pandemic – is dedicated to mental well-being. The campaign is dedicated to educating people about the effects of RA and raising awareness for the disease which can often not be seen by the naked eye.
With no known cure, ways of managing symptoms of the disease are incredibly important. There are natural products available over the counter that can work to relieve some of these symptoms. Modern research has led to a surge in green-lipped mussel extract products arriving on the market.
Pernaton is an over the counter cooling gel, also available as a food supplement, containing green-lipped mussel extract formulated to improve joint mobility. A source of high-grade Glycosaminoglycans and containing omega-3 fatty acids, 11 different minerals and 18 vital amino acids essential for joint health. The gel also provides external, impact support for direct-to-joint relief and can be taken alongside other medication.
Shirley Peet from Pernaton comments: ‘We have worked closely with specialists to ensure that Pernaton Gel and the Pernaton Capsules give positive results in managing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, which in line with the mission of RA Awareness Week 2020, significantly helps physical and mental well-being.’
