Dave Asprey discusses CAR.O.L on his latest episode of Bulletproof Radio
If you’re a fan of world leading biohacker Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof Radio podcast, you will know that when he developed his Bulletproof lifestyle and switched to a ketogenic diet, he also started amassing cutting-edge fitness equipment. Fed up with lengthy workouts that produced negligible results, Dave was on the hunt for an innovative time-saving kit that gets you fit and improves key biomarkers in the shortest possible time.
Dave found CAR.O.L and in his latest Bulletproof radio episode (Fast Fitness! 40 Seconds, 3 Times a Week – Lance Dalleck, Ph.D. – #657) in his conversation with Dr. Lance Dalleck, Professor of Exercise and Sports Science and High Altitude Exercise Physiology at Western Colorado University, digs deep into the science behind the game changing AI powered, adaptive resistance stationary bike that gives you a true HIIT workout in 40 seconds, giving your body the same benefits as a 45-minute jog in a fraction of the time.
In the podcast, launched on 7th January 2020, Dave and Lance, whose original research on CAR.O.L was independently funded by the American Council on Exercise explore why people have got it all wrong about exercise, why all commercial HIIT classes aren’t true HIIT and why they don’t work as well as true HIIT and why more exercise isn’t better. They also discuss the science behind CAR.O.L, how and why Lance did his research and they go into the detail behind the science of minimum effective dose exercise beyond which any further exercise is unnecessary, making working out on CAR.O.L a true game changer.
They discuss what happens to your body during and after this ‘minimal effective dose’ of exercise and explains how and why CAR.O.L can give you a better workout in 2 x 20-second sprints than lengthy, sweaty workouts can.
In a randomised, controlled trial of 32 people, Lance found that working out on CAR.O.L far exceeds the benefits of the government recommended 5 x 30 minutes a week of exercise. That’s great news for time poor and people that just plain hate long exercise!
For years, Dave has been writing that a true HIIT workout is better than time consuming, long workouts. Now, with CAR.O.L you just need to do 2 x 20 second sprints (and a few minutes warm up and warm down either side) to severely disrupt your homeostasis.
True HIIT works by rapidly depleting your glycogen (sugar) stores which leads to quickly burning fat, reducing your blood sugar and your blood pressure. This helps you lose weight and increase your cardio fitness much faster than an old-fashioned gym-based workout, sweaty spin class or jog. No more hours doing a so-called ‘HIIT workout’ that doesn’t give you a true HIIT session (where true HIIT is what you see in the laboratories).
Dave talks about the problem of so many people being resistant to exercise; either because they hate it or because they just don’t have the time, and how working out with CAR.O.L can quickly change inactive behaviour. After all, if doing the absolute minimum is better than the longer workouts you don’t enjoy, then why wouldn’t you hop on CAR.O.L three times a week?
For Dave, working out on CAR.O.L and getting results in the shortest amount of time means he has more time to focus on more important things, like spending time with his family, meditating and spending time in nature. The benefits of exercising with CAR.O.L include reduced risk of heart disease, weight loss, lower blood pressure, more control of blood sugar levels, longevity and improved cardio fitness.
Dave now has several CAR.O.L bikes in various locations including at his Upgrade Labs studio in Los Angeles. Performance enhancing technologies are the biohacker’s holy grail and CAR.O.L ticks all the boxes. It not only gets you fit in a very short time, but it helps change your physiology for the better. As Dave says in the podcast, CAR.O.L is ‘the first exercise bike he’s ever owned that hasn’t turned into a coat hanger’.
